How to Compare an Incense Discovery Set: A Six-Scent Journal
The most useful way to compare an incense discovery set is to try one scent at a time, keep every sample labeled and write a few notes in your own words. You do not need to burn every sample in one sitting or decide which scent is objectively best.
Know what you are comparing
The Lamtong Discovery Set currently lists six scents: Sandalwood, Osmanthus, Cypress, Mugwort, Ambergris and Black Agarwood. It includes two sticks of each scent, for 12 sticks in total, plus one stick holder. Check the current listing and the packaging you receive for the exact contents and instructions.
A scent name identifies the option you are trying. It does not, by itself, confirm a complete ingredient formula, a material source or a health effect. Read the product information and ask questions if a particular ingredient matters to you.
Give each scent its own session
Choose an occasion when you can stay present. Use a suitable holder, a stable heat-resistant surface and a well-ventilated space. Avoid running a scented candle, room spray or another incense scent at the same time. For a later comparison, use a similar setup where practical.
You can spread the six scents across separate days or occasions. This is a preference exercise, not a challenge to finish a box. Low-smoke incense still produces smoke; never leave it burning unattended and keep it away from children, pets and flammable materials.
Use this short journal template
| Prompt | Your note |
|---|---|
| Scent and date | Write the name from the sample label. |
| First impression | Woody, floral, herbal, sweet, dry, or your own words. |
| Presence in the room | Light, moderate or strong to you in this setting. |
| What stood out? | One detail you would recognize again. |
| Would I choose it again? | Yes, maybe, or no—and why. |
For example: “Sandalwood; softly woody to me; I would choose it while reading.” This is an example of a personal note, not a claim that everyone will experience the scent in the same way.
Revisit your favorite before choosing a full pack
With two sticks of each scent, you can return to a favorite on another occasion. Keep unused samples in their own labeled packaging. If your second impression differs, note what changed in the setting rather than assuming that your first note was wrong.
Once you have a shortlist, compare the full-size listing's stick count, dimensions, approximate burn time and price in your selected region. A sample set and a full-size pack may contain different quantities, so do not compare their prices without reading the pack details.
Let your notes guide the next choice
Keep one favorite and one scent you are curious to revisit. Then browse the incense collection with a clearer idea of your preferences. If sandalwood made your shortlist, you can also explore Yu Tan Sandalwood Incense Sticks.
The aim is a collection you enjoy using, rather than a shelf full of scents chosen only from their names.
